Student Employment Opportunities (STP)
There are four student employment opportunities within the Office of Student Transition Programs that vary from seasonal (summer/winter) to long term (academic year) depending on availability. Those positions and their descriptions are listed below.
Apply to Be an Orientation Leader for Fall 2024
New Student Orientation Leaders (OL) will work with the Peer Ambassador Team Leaders and staff of the office of Student Transition Programs to implement the New Student Orientation program in the Spring. The primary role of an OL is to provide guidance to new students and facilitate Orientation activities. Orientation Leaders will develop meaningful relationships with others, gain practical competence to carry out duties successfully and develop an understanding of their personal leadership development.
Responsibilities
- Guide and welcome new students, families, and guests to John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
- Assist with all aspects of Fall New Student Orientation including, but not limited to, orientation prep, escorting students/families and guests around campus, event set-up/tear down, participation in meals and evening activities, crisis response, and other duties as assigned.
- Facilitating and effectively managing small group discussions with incoming students including resource sharing, supporting students through their transition to college, self-identity exploration, etc.
- Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment by articulating and exemplifying John Jay College’s academic and community expectations, addressing common transition questions, discussing what it means to be part of a diverse community, and modeling an exploration of self/social identities.
- Being a responsible and positive peer mentor to new students, understanding that this relationship continues into the semester and has a significant impact on a student’s experience.
- Introducing students to campus support services and locations across campus, as well as social, emotional, and academic resources provided by the college.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in classes for Fall 2024
- Must be present for the entirety of OL Training in July and August and the Orientation program. See below dates.
- Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (Bachelors) or 3.0 GPA (Masters)
- Commitment to abide by all university policies and procedures.
- Must be in good disciplinary standing at the time of their selection and throughout their work with the office of Student Transition Programs. Any previously assigned conduct sanctions must be completed by the time of the interview process.
- Must be able to work on campus
Mandatory Time Commitments
- Must be in attendance in the Orientation Leader Group Interview on Thursday, March 29, 2024 from 1:40pm-2:55pm.
- Orientation Leaders will be expected to work 20 hours per week from late July to end of August (dates will be finalized during the Spring 2024 semester).
Benefits/Compensation
New Student Orientation Leaders will gain significant leadership experience; develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students; and learn effective communication skills. In addition, new student Orientation Leaders will receive a $1200 stipend (before taxes), meals during the on campus work days, and merch.

A Commencement Ambassador functions as a representative of Student Transition Programs at John Jay College. They will be providing support, resources and front desk services to graduating students and their families regarding Commencement.
Commencement Ambassadors are hired on a seasonal basis and typically work from the beginning of March to the beginning of June.
New Student Orientation Leaders (OL) will assist implement the New Student Orientation (NSO) programs for the Fall and Spring semesters. The primary role of an OL is to provide guidance to new students and facilitate Orientation activities. Orientation Leaders will develop meaningful relationships with others, gain practical competence to carry out duties successfully and develop an understanding of their personal leadership development.
Orientation Leaders are hired seasonally:
- For Fall Orientation Leaders, the hiring process will occur in the prior Spring semester. Hired OLs typically work from the end of July to the end of August.
- For Spring Orientation Leaders, the hiring process will occur in the prior Fall semester. Hired OLs typically work for the entire month of January.
A Peer Ambassador functions as a representative of Student Transition Programs at John Jay College. This position serves as a college assistant to the department's day to day functions providing support to incoming students, parents and families, and graduating students in New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Programs, Commencement, and more .
Peer Ambassadors are typically hired for the entire academic year (July to June).
A Peer Ambassador Interpreter functions as a representative of Student Transition Programs at John Jay College. They provide translation and interpretation services for parents and families during Parent and Family Orientations, Parent and Family Newsletters and more to ensure that we are meeting our community's needs.
Peer Ambassador Interpreters are typically hired for the academic year (August to May).
