Jamella Richmond

Jamella Richmond

 Dear John Jay Community,

My name is Jamella Rasheeda Richmond, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for Student Council President for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Over the past three years, I have had the privilege of serving on the Student Council in various roles across five administrations. During my time of service in two representative roles and the executive role of Vice President, I have not only acquired the necessary skills to support the organization but also to lead it with integrity and efficiency. I would be honored to have the opportunity to continue that service as your Student Council President in my final year.

My commitment to this community goes beyond the titles I’ve held—it's about the work I have done to improve the student experience. As your current Vice President, I have placed an immense focus on using my position to advance the needs of the student body. One of my key goals has been to raise awareness about mental health, and I am proud to have produced a diverse collection of mental health-related events, campaigns, and initiatives during my term, including the popularly engaged Speed Healing. Transparency, availability, and communication have also been cornerstones of my Vice-Presidential term, particularly in my management of over 100 Student Council applications across the academic year.

If elected your president, I will bring this same dedication and drive to my new role. I aim to establish three main initiatives throughout my presidency that address need-based concerns within John Jay. Though our representatives will still produce wonderful events throughout the year for you to attend, I will work behind the scenes to develop initiatives and programs that address our top concerns as commuter students including housing insecurity, transportation demands, and financial instability. First, when considering housing insecurity, I aim to work alongside external organizations to develop networks of resources available for each John Jay student who may be lacking basic amenities. I have already begun work on this initiative in my current role through a collaborative effort with the NADA Essentials organization and my team, who I am directly working with to implement a vending machine(s) across campus that offer everyday essentials (i.e., shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, oral care, chargers, etc.) at no cost for the entire student body. Second, I aim to develop an accessible transportation service for students with disabilities and impairments from the 59th Street subway station to campus, ensuring that every John Jay student has the support they need to succeed. Third, I aim to continue the work of my predecessors by maintaining a Student Council-sponsored scholarship program for applicable students. Lastly, building on my prior work in mental health throughout the 2024-2025 term, I aim to create a lasting foundation of wellness initiatives that will continue to benefit our community long after my time in office.

Above all, my goal is to exceed the trust you place in me as your president, working tirelessly to improve our student experience and leave a legacy of positive change.

John Jay, I humbly ask for your vote and the opportunity to accomplish even greater things together. Let’s make next year our best year.

Your Aspiring President, Jamella R. Richmond

My hands-on experience working with elected representatives serving on the Student Council as a former sophomore representative and current Chief of Staff to the Treasurer has revealed our community's challenges and incredible potential when we work together. I present a vision that bridges culture, unites clubs, and serves every student, regardless of background, schedule, or major, through my mission Bloodhounds R.I.S.E.

Zephan Patterson

Zephan Patterson

Hello,

I am Zephan Patterson a Sophomore and I’m running for the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Student Council Vice President. As a proud Guyanese, I emigrated to the United States with a passion in leadership and a purpose driven by determination and dedication. As someone who has prospered in a leadership role in high school, I’ve been elected as Student Government President where I worked and successfully uphold the student voices. During that tenure besides working with students, I’ve on multiple occasions collaborated with the school administration in trying to address and resolve student needs.

If elected as your Vice President, my vision for John Jay student body is to foster an environment where culture—beliefs, values, etc.—becomes well developed through communication, collaboration, and inclusive leadership. I will work with the executive board to empower every student to reach their full potential by ensuring their voices are not only heard but actively shape in our school community's decisions. My focus will be on driving positive change, fostering teamwork, and creating opportunities for students to develop their own leadership skills. Amongst this, it is also my goal to establish a safe and supportive school environment by addressing issues of violence, bullying, and conflict through preventive measures, awareness campaigns, and student empowerment.

Thank you for reading my excerpt about the plans in which I will work to implement for the school year 2025-2026. It would be my utmost pleasure to serve you and your voices during my John Jay trajectory.

With Love & Respect

Aneesa Thomas

Aneesa Thomas

Hello, my name is Aneesa Thomas, and I am a sophomore at John Jay College. Like many of you, I’ve been on a journey not only to advance my academic pursuits but to shape my life and make the best choices for my future. College, especially John Jay, plays a vital role in defining our lives, but we also know that outside factors can deeply affect the way we navigate this experience. As a student, I’ve often asked myself how to make the most of this time and create the best possible future, not only for myself but for my peers as well. That’s why, after almost two years of involvement with the Student Council, I’m eager to take the next step and run for Vice President.

As a Political Science major deeply engaged in the John Jay community, I’ve seen firsthand how critical it is to bridge the gaps that affect students' academic and personal growth. My goal as Vice President is to improve access to resources, prioritize mental health support, create a student-professor mentorship program, and strengthen connections between students, faculty, and administration. By addressing these key areas, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

I believe I can achieve these goals, as during my time at John Jay, I’ve worked to make tangible changes. As a freshman, I advocated for funding for the Mathematics and Science Department to ensure students had access to essential tools. I founded Make A Mends to provide winter gear for those in need. As Chair of the Committee on Clubs for two years, I focused on distributing funds fairly to support school spirit and student engagement. Additionally, I launched Department Discovery Day, helping students explore academic options and make informed decisions about their majors and better understand how they want to shape their future.

Beyond Student Council, I also work for the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, where I capture the essence of school spirit and leadership through marketing and promotions. This experience has given me a unique perspective on the ways students need support, and I’m eager to use this knowledge to make John Jay a better place.

While being a part of John Jay I will continue to lead with empathy and understanding to create lasting change. We’re all on this journey together, and if you choose to elect me as Vice President, you will see that my goal, passion, and virtue are all focused on helping you thrive. Let’s work together to make John Jay stronger, more connected, and a place where every student has the support they need to succeed.

In-Deria Barrows

In-Deria Barrows

Hello Bloodhounds,

My name is In-Deria Barrows, and as your current treasurer for the 2024-2025 school year, I am both excited and eager to announce my candidacy for re-election and share my vision with all of you.

Throughout my time, not only as your current treasurer but as a dedicated council member since my freshman year, I have gained invaluable experience in student leadership and financial management. I have always believed that a position does not define a leader; rather, a leader defines their position. Embracing this philosophy, I have taken on responsibilities beyond my designated role, supporting fellow executive members, and advocating for my peers, particularly within the STEM community.

Reflecting on my current term as treasurer, I take pride in the progress we have made. Many of the financial challenges identified in the last election have been addressed, including improvements in budget allocation and the streamlining of funding processes. However, new challenges have emerged. I have seen firsthand that many student organizations still struggle to secure the necessary funding for their initiatives, and miscommunication about financial policies continues to create obstacles. Recognizing these issues, I have taken the initiative to introduce new programs that, while still in their early stages, have the potential to create lasting change, such as financial literacy workshops and advocacy for underrepresented student organizations. My goal is to foster a more equitable distribution of resources and ensure that every student feels empowered to navigate financial processes with confidence.

Beyond finances, I take immense pride in being a passionate STEM student. As a Cell and Molecular Biology major and an active council representative, I understand the importance of time management and accessible resources. I have worked to build stronger connections between students and faculty, making faculty members more accessible to STEM students. Additionally, I have been working to expand resources within the MSRC (Math & Science Resource Center) to ensure students have access to the tools they need for academic success. These initiatives require time to develop, but I am committed to accelerating this progress, and I am confident that, if re-elected, we will see even greater advancements in these areas.

With my experience and unwavering commitment, I believe I am the optimal candidate for this role. If elected, I will continue to uphold the values of integrity, initiative, and action, aiming to deliver results that positively impact the entire student body.

Zain Chaudry

Dear John Jay constituents,

My name is Zain Chaudhry, and I am ecstatic to announce my plans to run for Student Council Secretary for the 2025-2026 academic year. As a sophomore representative this past academic year and currently serving as Chief of Staff to the Secretary, I have gained insurmountable insight into the inner workings of student council and the responsibilities of Secretary. Working hand in hand with the current Secretary I have maintained accurate records and facilitated smooth communication between students and council members. Alongside this, I also aided in the Committee on Commencement Activities responsibilities to ensure that seniors have a memorable and easygoing final year. I am also currently serving as secretary on the committee on clubs, which oversees clubs' finances and ensures clubs are all taken care of. Alongside this I also handle club budgets and aid the Committee in allocating funds, ensuring smooth operations for all clubs at our college. These experiences have prepared me to step into the secretary role with confidence and a clear vision for what needs improvement.

If elected, my priorities will include being transparent and accessible. I will ensure that meeting minutes, budgets, and all council decisions are easily accessible and organized for members. Transparency builds a more trusting environment, and I am committed to keeping our student body not only informed but also engaged. I will also work to strengthen communication between the student council and student clubs and organizations. Using the skills and connections I gained from being Secretary on the Committee on Clubs, I will ensure that communication between the council and other entities will be streamlined and essential. I will also make sure budgets for senior activities are handled with the utmost care and responsibility. As a former Sophomore representative, I understand the deep importance of amplifying student voices. My dedication to John Jay is evident through the litany of roles I have held, such as Orientation Leader, Sophomore representative, Committee on Clubs Secretary, and Chief of Staff to the secretary, where I have honed and strengthened my leadership skills.

With my firsthand knowledge of the secretary responsibilities and a passion for serving our community, I am ready for all the challenges that come with the position, and I am confident that we can work together to make John Jay a more connected, transparent, and united campus.

Your voice matters, and I am here to ensure it is heard.

I hope to take my experience in the USS and use it to directly support our John Jay community in its mission for justice.

Zobia Mushtaq

Zobia Mushtaq

Dear John Jay College,

My name is Zobia Mushtaq, and I am currently majoring in Law and Society. Growing up, I wasn’t heavily involved in clubs, but I always had an interest in joining the student council.

This year, I’ve decided to run for Sophomore Representative because of my passion for advocacy and leadership. As your representative, my goal is to ensure everyone feels heard and address issues within our class. As a freshman, I actively participated in the Pakistan Student Association (PSA) as a general representative, the Debate Society, and the Bangladesh Student Association (BSA). These experiences allowed me to get to know a diverse group of students and gain insight to how each culture is different. Ever since I was a child, I’ve aspired to pursue law and help solve crime. This has motivated me to actively engage in causes that make a difference in people’s lives. One example is volunteering to raise awareness for autism. Through volunteering and fundraising, I have advocated for better understanding and support for individuals with autism. These experiences have taught me the power of using your platform to create meaningful change. As an older sister, I know what it takes to listen, understand, and advocate for others, and I am confident that these skills will help me represent not just the sophomore class but every student at John Jay. If elected, I will work my hardest to ensure that your voices are heard, your concerns are addressed, and that our sophomore year is memorable for all the right reasons. I hope to bring our class closer together and to make a lasting impact.

Thank You, Zobia Mushtaq

Advancing Justice Through Technology Valeria Pavia Marin for Sophomore Representative

My name is Valeria Pavia Marin, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of sophomore representative. As someone currently pursuing a major in Computer Science and Information Technology, I am passionate about connecting people through many platforms. When I participated in the student council as a freshman representative, I joined because I cared about advocating the needs of others and ensuring that our voices could be heard. With my love for justice and technology, I am committed to serving the sophomore body by helping every student access any resources and support needed for success.

Being a part of leadership takes listening and understanding so that everyone can feel seen and heard. If elected, I would work to improve our student engagement in person and online so that we can further advocate for academic and career resources. As a STEM student, finding opportunities out there can be relatively challenging. Evelin Morales

Evelin Rosario Morales

Our college deserves a representative who listens, takes action, and stands for the students on campus. My name is Evelin Rosario Morales, and I am a Freshman Representative in the student council. This is my second semester at John Jay, which makes me a freshman, but credit-wise, I’m a sophomore. I’m thrilled to be running for the Sophomore Position on the student council. As a Freshman Representative, I have experience working in representative positions. I would like to keep thriving and showing what I’m capable of.

If I’m elected, there are various goals I would like to achieve. I will work to create an environment in which students can feel more welcome and enjoy the atmosphere that John Jay produces. My plan is to collaborate with other cohorts to hold memorable events for all students.

My plan is to host various student activities for students to enjoy after a long day of hard studying. Some initiatives would be creating networking events because I understand how hard it is to socialize on campus. During my first semester, I didn’t talk to anyone, but I began to attend events, which made my stay at John Jay more pleasant. Another event would be a De-stress event, especially during midterm and final weeks.

It would be an honor to represent sophomores and connect with students on campus. The time spent on campus should be educational while also fun and stress-free. Serving as a Freshman Representative has been an amazing experience that has helped me grow. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to my college community once more.

LShuhari

Louvinious Shuhari

My name is Louvinious Shuhari, and I want to represent you as a Sophomore Representative.

I believe that many students, especially sophomores, may not know about all the opportunities available to them at John Jay. I'll work to create accessible, informative platforms both online and on-campus -to ensure that students know about events, clubs, and activities. As a sophomore, the transition to college can be overwhelming. I want to work with counseling services to improve mental health resources, whether through more workshops, stress-relief events, or easier access to counselors.

I will push for more wellness programs such as mindfulness workshops, fitness classes, and mental health awareness days to help students manage stress and maintain a healthy balance between school, work, and personal life. I will promote the celebration of the diverse cultures and backgrounds represented at John Jay College by hosting more cultural events, festivals, and awareness campaigns. We should all feel proud of the diversity that makes our school unique. As sophomores, we’re often looking for opportunities to engage and build friendships outside of the classroom. I will push for more social and networking events tailored specifically to our year, from mixers to informal hangouts. (It's not about what you know, it's who you know) As a sophomore at John Jay College, I understand what it’s like to navigate the challenges of college life. Whether it’s adjusting to a new academic environment, managing stress, or finding ways to get involved, I’m committed to making sure that all students feel heard, supported, and connected. Together, we can create a more inclusive, engaged, and thriving campus community.

Telecisa McKenzie

Telecisa McKenzie

Dear John Jay College Community,

My name is Telecisa McKenzie, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Student Council. As a dedicated member of our John Jay family, I understand the challenges we face daily from financial burdens and limited resources to the need for stronger student advocacy and campus engagement, and proper communication of even events on campus and opportunities. Many students struggle to balance work and academics, access affordable textbooks, and find adequate support. Additionally, a lack of networking opportunities and networking opportunities between students and career development resources makes the transition from college to the workforce even more challenging. If elected to the Student Council, I will work diligently to address these issues. I will advocate for expanded financial aid resources, increase access to free or low-cost course materials, and push for enhanced mental health services. Recognizing the importance of community, I will also create initiatives that help students, especially transfers, connect with one another, ensuring no one feels alone.

Furthermore, I will collaborate with faculty and career services to bring more internship opportunities, networking events, and mentorship programs to campus. Halla Albukhaiti

Hello Fellow John Jay Students,

My name is Halla Albukhaiti and I’m pleased to announce that I’m running to become a Senior Representative. I truly care about advocacy and voicing the concerns of the student body, which is why I’m highly involved within my community. I’m currently a University Student Senate Delegate for the Student Council at John Jay! I represent the John Jay Student Council at monthly meetings with institutions across CUNY at the University Student Senate. Saja Tarifi

Saja Tarif

Hey Bloodhounds!

My name is Saja Tarifi, and I am running to be your Senior Representative. As a current Junior Representative on the Student Council, I have worked to foster an inclusive and engaging John Jay community, and I hope to continue these efforts by ensuring that all students feel heard, represented, and supported. One of my key initiatives is advocating for more open prayer spaces and ablution stations for Muslim students. As a Muslim student on campus, I have personally experienced the challenges of finding a suitable space to make wudu (ablution). It is essential that John Jay provides accessible and accommodating spaces for all students to practice their faith comfortably. I am committed to working with my peers on the council, administration, and fellow students to make this possible.

Additionally, I plan to host fun and engaging events for seniors, providing opportunities for them to relax and unwind amid the stress of their final year. College can be overwhelming, and I want to create moments where seniors can take a break, connect with their peers, and enjoy the time they have left at John Jay. Beyond these initiatives, I aim to strengthen collaboration between student clubs, encouraging students to explore different organizations and fostering a greater sense of community. Being at a commuter school can sometimes limit opportunities for students to connect with their peers and engage in campus activities. I want to create and promote spaces where students can build meaningful connections, get involved in clubs, and fully experience all that John Jay has to offer. I hope to earn your vote and continue working to improve our John Jay community!

As a transfer student, I understand the challenges that come with transitioning to a new academic environment: navigating unfamiliar systems, building connections, and finding a sense of belonging. Adjusting to a new college can be overwhelming, especially when transfer students often have fewer semesters to integrate and make the most of their time on campus. I am running for Transfer Representative because I want to be a voice for transfer students and advocate for the resources and support we need to succeed at John Jay College.

If elected, I will work to:

1. Expand career & internship opportunities: Many transfer students arrive with clear career goals but struggle to find internships and networking events tailored to their needs. I will advocate for more career development workshops, employer networking sessions, and internship placements specifically designed for upperclassmen transfers. Strengthening partnerships with local businesses, law firms, and government agencies will open doors to practical experience that prepares students for their careers.

2. Strengthen campus engagement: Joining student organizations and attending campus events can be intimidating for transfer students who are new to John Jay. I will promote the creation of a Transfer Student Committee to promote a sense of community, organize meet-and-greet sessions, and increase transfer student representation in clubs and leadership opportunities.

3. Improve communication & accessibility: Transfer students often miss out on crucial academic policies, scholarship opportunities, and student life events due to gaps in communication. I will work to establish dedicated platforms (such as newsletters, online forums, and social media groups) to provide timely updates and resources tailored to transfer students' unique needs. Ensuring that essential information is easily accessible will empower students to make informed decisions about their academic and extracurricular activities.

I am committed to making John Jay College a more welcoming and supportive environment for transfer students. By advocating for greater opportunities, stronger engagement, and clearer communication, I believe we can bridge the gap and make a lasting impact.

Your voice matters, and with your support, we can build a stronger, more connected transfer student community.

Vote Jack Harrison for Transfer Representative!

Davia Willis

Hey all, my name is Davia Willis, and I am a junior at John Jay. Additionally, I am an international student from the island of Jamaica and am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Undergraduate Student Delegate for the CUNY University Student Senate. As a dedicated advocate and passionate leader, I am eager to serve as the voice of John Jay students, ensuring that our concerns and needs are effectively communicated and addressed at the university-wide level.

I am running for this position because I believe representation matters, and I am committed to amplifying the voices of my peers. My experience in student advocacy speaks for itself. I have successfully worked to bring about positive changes at Queensborough, where I fought for campus improvements, increased student engagement, and enhanced communication between students and administration. Now, I want to bring that same dedication and impact to John Jay.

John Jay College deserves strong representation within the CUNY University Student Senate, and I am ready to take on that responsibility. I will fight for better student resources, stronger communication, and initiatives that improve student life on and off campus. I am not just a candidate; I am an amplifier for student concerns, a problem solver, and an unwavering advocate for the needs of our community.

If you want a delegate who is accessible, vocal, and action driven, I am that person. Let’s ensure that John Jay is not just present but truly heard at the CUNY USS. Vote for me as your Undergraduate Student Delegate!

Together, we will make a difference!

I, Minahell Nadeem, as an Undergraduate Representative of John Jay College at the University Student Senate (USS), envision creating a more collaborative environment among all CUNY campuses. Although there are already some shared events open to all CUNY students, I aim to increase these opportunities for networking, building connections, and simply making new friends. I plan to work with other USS members to organize events that involve multiple campuses, if not all, to foster a stronger sense of community across CUNY.

Additionally, I would be honored to be the voice of John Jay at the USS, ensuring that all our voices are heard, concerns addressed, suggestions considered, and problems solved. I strongly believe in the saying, “the more, the merrier,” and I am committed to discussing common issues faced by all campuses with other representatives. When more people advocate for the same cause, there is a greater chance of being heard. For instance, I support the initiative that MetroCard's should be free and provided to all undergraduate students at CUNY. I also want to ensure that specific campus issues at John Jay are effectively communicated and addressed at a higher level.

Furthermore, I am dedicated to empowering every student at John Jay by ensuring their voices are heard and their diverse experiences are valued. I strive to foster an inclusive campus culture where everyone feels represented and supported. I will advocate for inclusive policies that respect all genders, races, and ethnicities while amplifying underrepresented voices to ensure they are heard and valued.

I believe my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills make me well-suited for this role. I am approachable, dedicated, and passionate about making a positive impact. Also, I am committed to being a proactive representative who listens to student concerns and takes meaningful action. Moreover, I am committed to upholding the values of integrity, inclusivity, and excellence. I promise to represent the student body with honesty, determination, and empathy. With fellow students’ support, I am confident that together we can enhance the student experience at John Jay College and across all CUNY campuses.

At John Jay College you are expected to be a fierce advocate for justice, and one of the key components of justice is fairness. As an international student we are expected to adapt to a new way of life in the pursuit of education. In this said pursuit there are many challenges that must be overcome. Such as: affordable housing, employment, tuition assistance and unequal distribution of resources. Overcoming these issues reduces the barrier for success as an international student and can improve chances of graduating and having a beneficial college experience.

As the international representative I intend to continue advocating for more affordable housing resources for international students and employment opportunities to support our students. If I am elected, I intend to bridge this gap, by proposing the development of a comprehensive platform to inform international students about the resources available across CUNY. By promoting awareness and encouraging utilization of these resources, we aim to demonstrate the value and importance of these services, thereby advocating for the allocation of further support to meet the needs of the international student community.

In addition to this I hope to develop an “International Student Scholarship/Grant” designed specifically for international students who have shown academic excellence. This scholarship is intended to help students with tuition, books & transportation assistance every semester. I believe this is necessary since all F-1 students pay out of state tuition and are mostly unemployed or restricted to 20 hours of work per week. This scholarship will help support the needs of international students within John Jay.

I believe if I am elected, I can continue advocating for justice and fairness for international students within John Jay and by extension CUNY.

I am currently an international representative, the cohort leader of international representatives. From this experience, I was able to hear all those different obstacles and difficulties that international students are facing, and some good event ideas that can benefit international students. Based on my previous experience as an international representative, I have realized that there is much more work that needs to be done for the international students. The very first change that I want to make for the international student community is to provide an international lounge where international students can relax, engage, play, and share information and difficulties. Other than lounge, I will also assure that international students will receive the quality of academic and professional support that they need, which includes scholarship, internship opportunity, and resources that they need. Relating to this, the second change that I am looking forward to is to find employers or corporations that provide opportunities for the international students and bring them to the Career Con. Additionally, the most important thing, other than academic and professional goals, is fun. It is really important to enjoy the campus life in John Jay College. So, my last hope that I want to achieve if I am elected is to provide fun activities and programs to all international students to participate and enjoy. Previously, myself, along with my cohort members, Elijah and Elena, have hosted several events such as Game Night, April Fool Movie, Cultural Festival, and One To World Cruise for international students to enjoy their campus life. For this school year, I am excited to host informative, resourceful, fun events where international and non-international students can participate.
