How to Set Up a Presentation Assignment in Brightspace/VoiceThread

Setting up a presentation assignment using VoiceThread in Brightspace allows students to create multimedia-rich presentations with voiceovers and enables peer interaction through commenting and discussions. VoiceThread is integrated into Brightspace using the LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability), which allows for seamless submission and grading.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to set up a presentation assignment using VoiceThread in Brightspace:

1. Add VoiceThread to Your Course

  • Add Content to a Module:

    • Navigate to your course where you want to set up the presentation assignment.
    • Under the Content area, choose the module or week where you want to add the assignment.
    • Click Upload / Create > Create a File, and give this a title like “Final Presentation Assignment with VoiceThread.”
  • Insert Quicklink:

    • In the content editor, use the Insert Quicklink option.
    • Scroll down to External Learning Tools, and select VoiceThread from the list. This will link the VoiceThread tool to the assignment.

2. Set up the Assignment in VoiceThread

  • Access VoiceThread through Brightspace:

    • Once the VoiceThread link has been created, click on it to open VoiceThread within Brightspace.
    • This will take you to the VoiceThread LTI where you can create the presentation assignment.
  • Create a New Assignment:

    • In VoiceThread, you will have three assignment types to choose from:

      1. Create a VoiceThread: For students to create their own presentation from scratch.
      2. Submit a Comment: For students to comment on a specific VoiceThread you provide.
      3. Watch a VoiceThread: For students to watch a VoiceThread as an assignment.
    • Select Create a VoiceThread, since you want students to create their own presentations.

3. Provide Assignment Instructions in Brightspace

  • Add Assignment Instructions:
    • Provide detailed instructions in the Brightspace Assignments tool, outlining what students need to include in their VoiceThread presentation.
    • Example instructions might include:
      • Content Requirements: Specific topics they should cover, length (e.g., 7–10 minutes), number of slides, and any multimedia requirements (images, videos, etc.).
      • How to Use VoiceThread: Provide a brief guide or tutorial on using VoiceThread (you can also link to VoiceThread’s own help guides).
      • Submission Process: Explain how students should submit their VoiceThread presentation through the LTI link in Brightspace.

4. Set Assignment Settings in Brightspace

  • Create an Assignment Submission:

    • Go to the Assignments section in Brightspace (under Assessments) and create a new assignment for the VoiceThread presentation.
  • Submission Type:

    • Choose Text Submission as the submission type, as students will be submitting a VoiceThread link to their presentation.
  • Instructions:

    • Provide a link to the VoiceThread tool within the instructions so students can directly access it. Include the VoiceThread assignment requirements (e.g., how long the presentation should be, what topics to cover, and how to submit the VoiceThread link once they finish).
  • Due Date and Grading:

    • Set the due date and grading criteria, linking the assignment to the Gradebook if needed.
    • Attach a rubric to assess the presentation (e.g., content, organization, multimedia use, engagement).

5. Guide Students on How to Use VoiceThread

  • Student Instructions:

    • Provide instructions or a tutorial video explaining how to:
      1. Create a New VoiceThread: Upload slides, videos, or images.
      2. Record Voice Comments: Record their voice for each slide.
      3. Submit the Link: Copy the link to their finished VoiceThread presentation and paste it into the assignment submission area in Brightspace.
  • VoiceThread Help Resources:

    • VoiceThread provides built-in guides and support for students. You can link to the VoiceThread Student Guide or specific tutorials on creating presentations.

6. Enable Peer Review and Feedback (Optional)

  • Peer Review:

    • If you want students to comment on each other’s presentations, you can enable the Commenting feature in VoiceThread. Students can view and leave comments on their peers’ presentations using text, audio, or video.
    • Set this up by allowing students to view each other’s VoiceThreads after submission and requiring them to leave feedback on at least one other presentation.
  • Peer Feedback Guidelines:

    • Provide specific instructions on how to leave constructive feedback. You can set up a peer review discussion in Brightspace where students submit feedback on peers' presentations.

7. Grade the Assignment

  • Review Submissions:
    • Once students submit their VoiceThread presentations, go to the Assignments tool in Brightspace to view their submissions. They will submit the link to their VoiceThread here.
  • Grading:
    • Open the VoiceThread link provided by each student and review the presentation.
    • Grade according to the rubric you attached in Brightspace, evaluating elements such as content depth, use of multimedia, clarity of voiceover, and overall presentation style.
  • Provide Feedback:
    • You can provide written feedback directly in Brightspace or record audio/video feedback within VoiceThread.

8. Monitor and Support Students Throughout the Process

  • Provide Technical Support:

    • Be available to answer student questions, especially regarding how to use VoiceThread.
    • You can set up a Discussion Forum in Brightspace for students to ask technical questions or seek clarification on assignment requirements.
  • Monitor Progress:

    • Check the VoiceThread Dashboard to monitor how many students have started and submitted their presentations.
