Over the past few decades, trans people have become the center of many public conversations, from media representation to their participation in sports. This attention has made it look like trans people are a novelty to us, although all societies throughout history have known trans people. Why is this hard to see if trans people have appeared in modern-day TV shows, in street activism of the twentieth century and in pre-colonial societies in the Americas? This workshop will be an opportunity to talk about why asking questions about gender, trans and queer people and their lived experiences is so challenging. Join this conversation to ask questions, get answers and explore ways to be an ally to all who defy the rigid rules of gender.
