Bio

STEVEN FECHTER is a playwright, screenwriter, and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. His theatrical works have been produced throughout North America and Europe. Recent productions include The Golden Aurora (NY Fringe Festival), and The Woodsman (Old Red Lion Theatre, London; Theater Bielefeld, Germany). In spring 2011, Resonance Ensemble Theatre produced his commissioned play Shakespeare’s Slave at the Harold Clurman Theatre on Theatre Row. In April 2012, his play The Artifacts will premiere at the Bridge Theatre in New York City. As a screenwriter he co-wrote the script for the film The Woodsman, based on his play. His published work includes The Woodsman, The Last Cigarette (Samuel French, Inc.) and The Commission (Theater der Zeit). Honors and awards include guest artist at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, where he co-led a workshop of his play The Fiend; first prize winner of the Slamdance Screenwriting Competition for The Woodsman; two-time winner of the Samuel French Short Play Festival for The Last Cigarette and Lunch with Jack; Humanitas Prize finalist in screenwriting for The Woodsman; writing fellowships at Yaddo and New River Dramatists. He also writes for ScriptShark.com's ScriptWriting Blog, commenting on screenwriting and film. He is a member of Resonance Ensemble, EST Playwrights Unit, and The Dramatists Guild.
