Faculty Mentor Award

1. Junior Mentor Award (total award: 1):

(1) award will be given to a faculty from any discipline. Individuals applying must demonstrate significant mentorship within the first (6) years of their service as faculty at John Jay College and may have mentored any number of undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients will be eligible to apply to the Senior Mentor Award in the future.

This award carries a $1,200 prize.
 

2. Senior Mentor Awards (total awards: 2):

(1) award will be given to a faculty from the Psychology or Sciences disciplines; and (1) award will be given to a faculty member from all other academic divisions. Individuals applying must have served as faculty at John Jay College for a minimum of (6) years and may have mentored any number of undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients will be eligible to apply to the Lifetime Mentor Award in the future.

This award carries a $1,500 prize.
 

3. Lifetime Mentor Award (total award: 1):

Every (2) years (on years ending: 0/2/4/6/8), (1) award will be given to a faculty who has served as faculty at John Jay College for at least (10) years, previously received the Senior Mentor Award, and continued to build on their mentorship expertise and portfolio in significant ways since.

This award carries a $2,000 prize.

General application criteria:

• Applications must be sent to osrc@jjay.cuny.edu by April 15 by the applicant.
• Application may be submitted year-round.
• Faculty must formally self-nominate and submit all materials, but students and faculty (who might function as recommenders; see below) should encourage their role models and peers to apply.
• All (3) awards are distinct one-time prizes.
• Subject to above description and below criteria, the application is open to any and all faculty, regardless of status or title.

The application packet for the Senior and Junior Faculty Awards must comprise:

1. A list of all undergraduate/graduate students that have been mentored in scholarly research or creative work, beyond classroom requirements or interactions. This list should include any awards that the nominee’s students have received, presentations they have given or co-authored, publications they have co-authored, and the current status and location of the student.
2. A one-page letter of support from a current or former student mentee.
3. A one-page letter of support from a colleague, chair, or dean. This letter must include an explicit statement detailing why the efforts of the nominated individual are exemplary and above and beyond those efforts of his or her disciplinary peers.
4. A mentoring statement, that details the scholar’s distinguished approach to mentoring.

For the Lifetime Faculty Award, in addition to the above, requirements are modified as follows:

1. A one-page letter of support from (2) current or former student mentees.
2. A one-page letter of support from (2) colleagues, a chair, or dean.

Award use:
The award will consist of recognition at the Faculty Mentor Recognition Reception during the annual Research & Creativity Expo as well as at the Faculty Awards Ceremony in spring of each year. The award is subject to the following restrictions: The monetary award cannot be used for release time, summer salary, or conference travel (except as described below). The monetary award must be used within 12 months of the announcement of the award date. The award is designed to support the research or creative work of the recipient in ways that support the involvement of JJC undergraduate and/or graduate student research assistants. Possible uses include equipment, supplies, computer needs, student stipends, other research needs, and faculty travel to accompany students to an academic conference or to a conference/workshop that explicitly promotes undergraduate/graduate research mentoring. (Faculty travel to a professional conference unrelated to student mentoring and without accompanying students will not be supported.) Any questions should be directed to osrc@jjay.cuny.edu.
