How to Apply to Study Abroad

Completing Your Study-Abroad Application

All applicants must be meet with a study abroad advisor. Before you submit your application, please refer to the checklist below:

1. PERSONAL STATEMENT:

Please type and attach a 1-2 page essay explaining why you wish to join this program, and what contribution it will make to your education and career. Also include, if you wish, any characteristics or qualities you possess that you think would benefit the program. Please upload to your application.

2. RECOMMENDATION LETTER:

Students are required to request one letter of recommendation from a college-level instructor. Students participating in a faculty-led program cannot request this letter from the professor leading the program. Please have the recommender email the letter to studyabroad@jjay.cuny.edu.

3. TRANSCRIPT:

Please attach an unofficial copy of your transcript to this application. CUNY students may access their transcripts through CUNYFirst. If you are a transfer student, please provide an unofficial transcript from your former institution.

4. COPY OF VALID PASSPORT:

Please submit a copy of the biographical page of your passport and supporting documents, (i.e. visa, US Permanent Residency Card, etc.). If you do not have a passport, you will need to file for one, and provide a copy of your paid receipt for the pending passport with your application. Once your passport is processed, it is the student's responsibility to submit a copy of the biographical page to the OISP. Please upload to your application, otherwise email it to our office once your receive it.

5. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

Home-Campus Authorization Form

  • To be completed at our office for John Jay College students or home campus study-abroad office for non-John Jay College students. Please upload to your application or submit in-person.
    • Complete the top portion, check either YES or NO, and sign at the bottom.

CUNY International Travel Waiver and Emergency Contact Form

  • The CUNY International Travel Waiver must be completed and signed. Please upload to your application.
    • Read and complete Part B (Part A can be left blank).

6. APPLICATION FEE <-- click for payment portal:

non-refundable application fee of $50.00 is due at the time of application. Credit and debit card payments can be made through the link. Money orders, certified checks, and cash are also accepted and can be submitted in-person. Money orders and checks are to be made out to John Jay College.

Graduate students: Please make sure that you obtain permission from either your major advisor or chairperson of your department before you apply for any study-abroad program.


The following documents must be submitted only AFTER you've been accepted into your program:

1. PHYSICIAN’S STATEMENT:

We encourage students to make an appointment with a physician ASAP, as wait times vary. Pages 1 & 2 are to be completed by the student, while page 3 is to be completed by a physician. Please include your blood type.

2. FLIGHT ITINERARY:

Submit a copy of your flight itinerary via email to studyabroad@jjay.cuny.edu.

3. STUDENT VISA (if applicable):

Submit a copy of your visa via email to studyabroad@jjay.cuny.edu.

4. STEP ENROLLMENT:

STEP enrollment

STEP is for U.S. citizens only. To enroll in STEP, please visit https://step.state.gov/STEP/Index.aspx and follow the prompts. Submit a screenshot of your enrollment or forward your confirmation email to studyabroad@jjay.cuny.edu.

5. SPARC TRAINING:

All study abroad students must complete their SPARC training, it can be found on Blackboard on the right side under the "My Organizations" tab. Submit your certificate via email to studyabroad@jjay.cuny.edu.

6. REGISTRATION FORM:

All study abroad courses must be pre-approved to guarantee transfer credits. In order to obtain credit for your study abroad courses, you must stop by the OISP (Office of International Studies & Programs) to pick up a registration form in Haaren Hall 530. This step should be completed once you've chosen your course(s) and prior to your departure. You may receive either Major, Minor, General Education, or Elective credit for a course.

  • Major/Minor credit: the course(s) must be approved by your major/minor coordinator, who will sign off and provide the JJC equivalent
  • General Education/Elective credit: the course(s) must be approved by Dean Killoran in Academic Programs, located in Haaren Hall 532

Additional documentation not submitted through the application can be either dropped off in-person at the Office of International Studies & Programs or sent via email.
