Testing

The Testing and Evaluation Office is part of the Division of Enrollment Management.  Our primary charge is to administer the CUNY Assessment Tests (CAT) to incoming students required to satisfy the admissions requirements for entrance to John Jay College.

What are the CUNY Assessment Tests?

  • Note: All new students are required to take the CUNY Assessment Test in Mathematics for course placement even if they meet one or more of the mathematics criteria.

John Jay College requires the following scores on the CUNY Assessment Tests in order to demonstrate minimum proficiency:

  • CAT in Reading: a scaled score of 55 or more
  • CAT in Writing: a total score of 56 or more
  • CAT in Mathematics:
    • Elementary Algebra (Math 5) score of 57 or more

The Testing and Evaluation Office also administers the Ability to Benefit Exam (ATB) for those students applying for TAP benefits and who may have received a high school diploma from a foreign country.
