John Jay College of Criminal Justice is the first four year college in the nation offering coordinated access to services and resources in a “one stop shop” through a Single Stop site. Funded by the Robin Hood Foundation, Single Stop provides students and their households with Free Financial Counseling, Legal Aid, Tax Preparation, Public Benefit screening and other essential services to assist students to stay in college and graduate.

Consult with a Lawyer-Legal Aid Society

In partnership with The Legal Aid Society, students and their household can access Legal Aid services at the John Jay College Single Stop office to address issues of public benefits, immigration, housing, family law, employment, consumer law or any situation that may require legal counsel or representation.  Legal Aid is the nation’s oldest and largest non-for-profit legal services organization. Legal Aid advocates for low-income individuals and families across a variety of civil, criminal, and juvenile rights matters, while also fighting for legal reform.

Meet with a Financial Counselor-New York Legal Assistance Group

In partnership with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), students and their households can obtain comprehensive financial counseling, to increase their financial literacy, create financial plans and budgets, address debt, increase/establish credit, download credit reports, and work on savings goals. Financial Counseling is an opportunity for students to empower themselves and their families to achieve their financial goals and strengthen life-long money management skills.

Learn if you are eligible, apply and recertify for Public Benefits

Single Stop aims to harness two of the country’s most effective anti-poverty tool coordinated access to America’s Safety Net (government benefits and resources) and a college education. Some of these benefits include the Tax Credits, Health Insurance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) also known as Food Stamps, WIC, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and more. Students and their household can learn if they are eligible for these and other public benefits at the Single Stop office with the assistance of new innovative technology and a Single Stop counselor.

Prepare Taxes for Free-Food Bank for New York City

In partnership with the Food Bank for New York City, students and their households can prepare their taxes at the Single Stop office during tax season, free of charge. Walk-Ins are welcomed February-April.

  • W-2 forms for each job
  • Photo ID
  • Social Security Card
  • If married and filing jointly spouse must be present
  • Other related documents (1099 etc.)
  • If claiming Child Care Tax Credit documentation and Tax ID number
  • Voided Check or Bank Account routing number for faster direct deposit
