Legal Services

Through a Partnership with the Legal Aid Society, one of the nation’s largest legal non-profit organizations, Single Stop offers free legal services on Wednesdays from 2:30pm to 6pm when classes are in session. Legal assistance is available for any situation that may require legal counsel or representation, including:

  • Housing
  • Immigration
  • Family Law
  • Public Benefits
  • Consumer issues

Financial Counseling

Meet with a Financial Counselor-New York Legal Assistance Group

In partnership with the Financial Counseling Division of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), Single Stop offers comprehensive financial counseling on Thursdays from 10:30am to 6pm when classes are in session. Financial counseling can help you:

  • Increase financial literacy
  • Manage expenses
  • Address debt
  • Create a savings plan
  • Build/maintain credit
  • View your credit report
  • Invest.

Public Benefits

Single Stop works closely with community partners to increase access to public benefits. We help with programs like:

  • SNAP (Food Stamps)
  • Public Assistance
  • Unemployment Insurance/599
  • Lifeline (free cell phone service)
  • WIC
  • Subsidized Child Care
  • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).

In relation to these benefits, we provide the following services:

  • Screening
    • Find out if you are eligible for benefits according to official policy.
  • Application Assistance
    • Submit/Complete applications on campus
  • Case management
    • Submit documents
    • Recertify
    • Communicate with benefit agencies 
  • Advocacy
    • Help getting the benefits you are entitled to receive

Tax Preparation

Single Stop partners with Food Bank for New York City to offer free tax preparation services during tax season (usually January-April.) All of our tax preparers are IRS-certified. Returns for previous years and amendments for any eligible year are filed in March and April.
The documents required to file a tax return include:

  • Social Security Card
  • Photo ID
  • W-2 forms for each job
  • Any tax documents sent to you (1098-T, 1099 etc.)
  • Documentation and Tax ID number if claiming the Child Care Tax Credit
  • Voided Check or Bank Account & Routing Number if you would like direct deposit
