The Doctoral Program in Forensic Psychology of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) is housed at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Drawing on the College’s extensive history and experience in forensic psychology, the doctoral program is designed to meet the needs of this fast growing field of psychology that develops and applies psychological principles, practice and research to the administration of criminal and civil legal systems.
This full-time doctoral program is divided into two tracks – Clinical Forensic Psychology and Experimental Forensic Psychology. The program is based on the scientist-practitioner (Boulder) model of doctoral education in psychology that places emphasis on research training as well as clinical/applied preparation.
The Clinical Forensic Psychology track requires 90 credits of coursework (including practicum experience), a dissertation, and a one-year internship. Upon completion, students will be eligible for New York State licensure as psychologists. This track was designed to educate the next generation of academic scholars contributing to the field of clinical forensic psychology and trains students to provide professional psychological services in a variety of clinical and research settings and to contribute to the development of knowledge in clinical psychology.
The Experimental Forensic Psychology track requires 60 credits of coursework and a dissertation. (Graduates are not eligible to become licensed psychologists.) This track trains students to generate knowledge at the intersections of psychology and law as academicians and applied researchers. The track emphasizes research training, drawing on areas of psychology such as social, cognitive, industrial/organizational and experimental psychology, decision and policy sciences, and evaluation research methods.
The world-renowned faculty of the Doctoral Program in Forensic Psychology represent a wide range of academic disciplines, specializations, and areas of expertise within all the core areas of psychology along with particular expertise in criminal and civil forensic psychology.
Applications for the Doctoral Program in Forensic Psychology must be received by the Graduate Center by December 1st.
