John Jay College receives applications from students living in New York City, across the country and around the world. As a result, we have an interesting and dynamic campus with students coming from all 50 states and more than 100 nations. All must meet specific standards for acceptance.
Admission to the baccalaureate program
Admission to John Jay is competitive and our students are exceptionally talented. All entering freshmen applicants are considered for admission based on their high school academic average, academic units, SAT or ACT scores and/or GED scores. A diploma from an accredited high school, an equivalency diploma, or a diploma from a United States Armed Forces Institute is required for entrance to the College. A high school certificate or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma is not acceptable. Please review the Freshman Admission Profile for John Jay College to get an idea of the mean grade point average (GPA) and SAT scores for last year's admitted freshman class.
An applicant for freshman admission must present evidence of having received a high school diploma from an accredited high school. Students from non-English speaking countries must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. All baccalaureate students must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or ACT prior to admission.
All new students are required to meet standards in three skills areas: reading, writing and mathematics, before enrolling in a CUNY senior college. Students can demonstrate that they meet the University’s skills requirement based on SAT, ACT, or New York State Regents test scores or through the CUNY Skills Assessment Test.
