At John Jay College, we welcome questions from prospective students and their parents.  You’ll find answers to many of your questions throughout this website on topics such as:

1. Will I have to take any placement tests?
Yes, all students will be required to take the CUNY Assessment Tests. You may be exempt from taking the CUNY Reading and Writing Tests if you have an SAT Score of 480 or higher on the verbal section or a NYS English Regents score of 75 or higher. You may be exempt from taking the CUNY Math placement if you have a Math SAT score of 500 or higher or a NYS Math A regents score of 75 or higher. Students exempted from the Math placement, however, must take a level three Math test to be placed in an appropriate Math level course. If you miss your testing date or require further information on testing, contact the Testing Office at: (212) 237-8108 or visit their website at: http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/testing

2. When do I meet with an academic advisor and register?
You will meet with an academic advisor once you have taken the CUNY Test(s). The advisor will help you to develop a first semester program based on your skills information. At this session you will discuss skills placement, review information on the various academic programs that are offered on campus, discuss short-term and long-range academic and professional goals, and register for classes. Out-of-town students can contact the Department of Academic Advisement at (212) 237- 8000 Ext.2066 to arrange an online or telephone registration. Early registration begins in early April.
